Three reasons the fabric matters more than the shape.
Friction — Slides, doesn't grip
Satin has a smooth face, so hair moves under it instead of catching. Less pulling when you take it out at the end of the day.
Shape — No hard crease
The fabric gathers around a covered elastic, so pressure spreads out. You won't get the sharp kink a thin band leaves behind.
Hold — Firm enough for a bun
The elastic inside is chosen for stretch that comes back. Two loops for fine hair, one for thick.

Nothing here comes off a production line. This is the actual order of work for a single scrunchie.

Cut the strip
Satin is cut on a measured strip so the gather sits even all the way round.

Sew the tube
Stitched right sides together, leaving a small gap to work through.

Turn it out
Pulled through by hand. The slow part, and what keeps the seam hidden.

Thread the elastic
Elastic fed through, knotted, then the gap closed with a blind stitch.
They last longer if you wash them like fabric, not like plastic.
- Hand wash in cool water with a mild soap. No hot water.
- Press the water out. Don't wring, it stretches the elastic.
- Dry flat in shade. Direct sun dulls the sheen.
- Keep bow clips and stone clips dry so the setting holds.
